The Pros and Cons of Custom Displays

Many retailers are leery of custom displays, because they perceive them to be an expense their budget doesn’t have room for.  They opt for generic items, because they’re cost-effective and a lot less goes into deploying them.

But the thing about branding is that it’s intended to infuse every aspect of your outlet and what it sells.  It’s what tells people your story and when they’re in-store, that story should be more apparent than ever.

Custom displays can do that.

Let’s discuss the pros and cons of custom displays.

Expense.

As mentioned above, retailers tend to shy away from custom displays, because of the cost involved.  But they don’t have to cost an arm and leg.

You can choose where to place custom display elements for maximum impact and a minimal dent in your wallet.  You’re in the driver’s seat.  You may want something just for the front of the store, the cash register, or the center of the store.  Custom display outfits will work with you to scale items to your store, lending a tailored appearance.

But if you’re leery about outlay, customizing may be something to leave for another day.  The size of your store can also impact the usefulness of custom display options, particularly if it’s a very small space.  It’s a highly individual choice to make.

The branding advantage.

Branding is a big deal.  As we’ve noted, it should touch every aspect of your outlet, from literature, to online outreach, to your storefront, to the back wall.  It’s your story and it will be told.

Custom displays work with your brand to create a feeling.  That feeling is a strong sense of the quality of your enterprise, its mission and your product line.  It’s who you are, so it matters.

But if you’re just starting out, custom displays may seem an additional financial burden.  You may not be ready for your brand to “gel” and become permanent.  Many retailers start out with an idea that they develop over time, as they get to know their niche and the customers who frequent it.

For new retailers, customizing at the earliest stage may be a costly error.  You may be jumping the gun.  One of the most compelling advantages of custom displays is their ability to amplify your brand message in-store, solidifying and clarifying it.

If you’re not there yet, perhaps it’s best to wait until you are.  With more experience under your belt, you’ll have a better idea of what you need.

Custom displays are for established brands.

A well-established brand will be able to use custom displays to their full advantage.  This is the level of retail at which they’re most important.

But if you’re still establishing your brand, or if you’re not budgetarily prepared for the outlay custom displays represent, off-the-shelf and improvisation can be just as effective.
